Sneaker Pimps

We Jakarta dwellers have a rare opportunity this weekend to visit the Worlds Largest Touring Sneaker Exhibition. People exhibit cars, watches, jewelry, art, and so on, so a sneaker exhibition was bound to come along sooner or later. I would never really consider a pair of shoes being art but after spending time with my friend Suri from NYC, I have started to see footwear in a whole new light.

He explained that a pair of shoes is not just something to put on your feet to keep them warm or protect them from the rough ground. They are actually an extension of who you are. Most people own more than 20-30 shirts at any given time right? So they would normally pair them up with different pants or jeans so that gives them maybe more than 100 different clothing combinations. After all, you can’t wear the same clothes every day right?! So with that 100 different combinations we will usually only split them between the 3 or 4 pairs of shoes we own. Doesn’t really make sense does it?

Sneaker Pimps take unique footwear to a whole new level. They travel around the world exhibiting and selling their exclusive custom shoes and perform live showcases of their talents. Attendees of the showing will not only be able to admire these awesome works of art but will also be entertained by a variety of DJ’s and live skateboarders. Artists in attendance will be Futura and Ewok from NYC and SBTG from Singapore. Numerous local artists will also be showcasing their creations.

It is vital for us to attend this exhibition and support the local art community. The art of custom designed sneakers is rare but developing quickly. We are so fortunate that organizers take chances by bringing these events to our city. Personally I have never been to a sneaker expo nor have I seen many custom or rare shoes apart from the ones my friends own. But seeing Surri so passionate about the subject has made me curious and excited to see what these individuals have produced.

Art is the greatest form of expression in my opinion and this form of art for the time being is extremely unique. If you know anyone involved in fashion or art here in Jakarta I would urge you to convince them to attend the Sneaker Pimps exhibition. By patronizing such events we can insure that more entertainment of this sort will be available to us in Jakarta. Otherwise most shows only go as far as Singapore. The dates and venue are posted below. I hope you pass the word around. Sorry I could not post any pictures. My ADSL line is acting the fool again, but that’s all the more reason for you to come and see what it’s all about your self.
